Each player receive two secret hole cards
that only they can see and use. Five 'community' cards are then dealt that
everyone can see and use. These cards plus each players hole hole cards
are used to make the best five-card hand. Players can use both, one or
none of their hole cards. There are four rounds of betting. Betting starts from the position next to
the dealer button, and moves clockwise around the table. The dealer button
moves one place to the left after each hand.
Blinds: Before anyone has been dealt cards, blind bets are required from the two
players to the left of the dealer. This ensures that there is some money
in the pot to play for at the start of each game. The big blind is
always double the amount of the small blind. The amount of the blinds
will remain the same in a ring game, and gradually increase in tournament
games so that players are eliminated.
Pre-Flop: Once everyone has been dealt cards, the first round of betting begins.
Action begins with the person left of the big blind (known as under the
gun). This person has three options. To Call bet the same amount as the big blind to stay in the hand.
To Raise to increase the amount bet by the big blind. A raise must
be at least double the amount put in the big blind. All other players
must now match the raise. To Fold The player throws his cards away and is no longer part of the
hand.
Every player must bet the same amount in order for play to continue. If
know one has raised the bet, the big blind can opt to check and continue
to the next round, or raise. If the pot has been raised before it gets to
the big blind they must either call, fold, or re-raise.
The Flop:
Three 'community' cards are dealt in the middle of the table, players can
now make a 5-card hand using the community cards and their own two hole
cards. A second round of betting follows.
The Turn
Or fourth street, a fourth community card is dealt on the table. The third
round of betting follows.
The River Or fifth street, the fifth and final community card is dealt, followed by
the final round of betting.
The Showdown If there is more than one player left in the game after the final round of
betting the best 5-card hand wins. Should two or more players have the
exact same 5-card hand the pot will be split between them.
Should everyone fold to a bet before the showdown at any stage in the
game, the player who placed the bet wins the pot. He or she is not
required to show their cards.
